The Parallax

2017-2018

The parallax is defined as “the effect whereby the position or direction of an object appears to differ when viewed from different positions.” It is a common “error” with a variety of cameras where the position of the subject in the viewfinder does not line up with the camera’s lens, creating a shift in the final image.

The Parallax” as a collection builds from this definition in relation to how one would remember (or misremember) events, people, or places years later. The viewpoint of what is familiar is skewed and distorted due to the passage of time, rendering narrative elements and events questionable and tenuous. This series of hybrid graphoscopes contains symbolic references to prior memories of dreams, family, and places that have altered over the years. The nature of photography is to record a memorable experience, while memory itself is photographic input for the mind through our eyes. We use the term photographic memory to describe someone who has the ability to recall substantial, pristine detail. We all have stories, experiences, places, and people we want to remember. The need to remember - the wanting to - is inherent in all human beings.

The work is interactive, meant to be held and viewed from both the viewing screen side and through the lens to see the interior, which also contains elements relating to the exterior image.
