Mother’s Milk
2022 - 2023
I am deeply interested in exploring the intersections of place and memory and how these elements can inform the creative process. My work is inspired by the physical environments and landscapes that have left a lasting impression on me, as well as the memories and emotions that are tied to these places.
For the series Mother’s Milk, I began the process by collecting found materials from the place that I was exploring, a farm in Kansas. These materials serve as a tangible connection to the physical environment and allow me to create pieces that are deeply rooted in this location. By utilizing found materials, I am also able to incorporate a sense of history and narrative into my work, as these objects often hold their own stories and associations.
The primary medium is cyanotype, a photographic printing process that creates a distinctive blue image. Cyanotypes allow me to capture the essence of a place through the use of sunlight and water, creating a unique and organic image that is both ephemeral and enduring. I often use cyanotypes as a starting point for my work, layering them with found materials and other media to create evocative and tactile pieces.
Through this series, I aim to create a sense of connection between the viewer, the physical environment, and the memories and emotions that are tied to a particular place. I hope to inspire a sense of curiosity and wonder about the world around us, and to encourage others to explore the beauty and complexity of the natural world through art.
